First Alert Security Chest Review {Giveaway}

How many people have a secret hiding spot for important papers? I know over the years I have been guilty of this! We have lived in some extremely tight quarters, where I did not think we had room or the budget for a home safe, like the First Alert Security Chest. In my attempt to make do with what we had, I created many “secret hiding spots” and when it came time for us to move to a new place, it would take me a bit to find those important papers. I can even recall making a fire plan for a mad dash to grab these papers if time allowed. :-) But in all reality, my “safe” places were not very safe at all. If I could not find my papers when needed or had to check multiple places only to discover that what I was looking for was not there, I was just adding more chaos to my life. After reading this below, I knew I could not keep my old system for much longer!

While we like to think it will never happen to us, a home is broken into every 14 seconds, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Add to that the more than 380,000 residential fires that wreak havoc on homes each year* and the $2 billion in property damage that is caused by flooding, and it’s no wonder Americans are increasingly concerned about the safety of their homes and belongings. The good news is there is a simple solution to protecting valuables in any of these unexpected situations – a residential safe.

When I used to think of a home safe, I pictured a large, bulky, expensive safe. I mean, big is the only way to keep everything safe, right? But, I was proven wrong when First Alert sent me this First Alert 2013F Security Chest to review. With dimensions of  11 inches by 7 inches and 4 inches high, it is large enough to keep all my important papers up to letter size. Even most of my full sheet documents are already folded in half or thirds to fit into envelopes, so this is perfect. I can even fit in the safe some of my important family videos that are on mini tapes and some back up CDs of all my pictures from the computer. The safe is the right size to fit on a shelf in a closet or under a bed without standing out or being an eye sore. And the price is very affordable. I do not know why I never realized it before!

Some other features that this safe has:

  • Clamping style latch with key lock. It comes with 2 keys
  • A carry handle to easily move the safe around
  • Fire Resistant
  • Waterproof even when fully emerged
  • Digital media protection
  • 5-year limited warranty

I am loving the additional fire resistant and waterproof features, too. That helps set my mind at ease if something ever happened to our house.

In addition to these features there are a couple of tips that are sent with the safe. It is recommend that all items (important paper documents, jewelry, currency, etc)  be placed inside of air-tight containers before being stored. It is also recommended that the safe be opened for 20 minutes every 2 weeks to air it out.

With this new safe, I have one less worry on my list, which feels so good!

  3. My biggest safety issue is probably that all those important papers you need on hand… birth certificates, SS cards, medical papers… mine are all in different places. We just moved and thank goodness it’s summer because I have no idea where my kids birth certificates are at the moment!!!!
