I have to admit it, I really like this game! Family Talk is a fun conversation opening game that can go anywhere! Created by an Occupational Therapist, Beth Daniels, who grew up blessed to hear stories and experiences directly from her grandparents and great grandparents. “Over the years, she realized that the more she learned about them, the better she understood herself. As a result, she treats the stories they shared as priceless gifts that she is determined to pass on to her own children.” She “understands all too well how active lives and busy schedules can prevent families from sharing the anecdotes and folklore that make a family a family.”
Family Talk came at a perfect time. It arrived just before we went on a long drive and vacation to visit family for a couple of weeks. On our trip we have had many opportunities to pull out this game and have a fun time with the questions. My nieces were especially excited when I showed them this game. We had a fun time roasting hot dogs and marshmallows outside while my 3 older nieces picked the questions to ask. It was fun to hear their opinions and they enjoyed hearing the responses from the adults, and especially their parents! I was always surprised to learn something new about someone with each question.
When the game first arrived I was not sure if I would be able to play it with my own children 3 and 4 years old. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! The first question I asked my son from this game was “What is something that your parents taught you?” His response: “To be nice.” As simple as his answer was, I loved his understanding of the question and willingness to respond.
I also like how portable this game is. If I want to take it somewhere with me, I just hook it to my bag, so I do not forget it. I can pull it out at dinner or in the car and ask a question or two. This game is truly a game for all ages. With 100 questions, there is a variety of conversations that can happen and it is a great way to help a families get to know each other better and bring each other closer. Plus, as I am discovering, there is always something new to learn about everyone!
