Summer Car Boredom Busters Age 7-12 {Review and Giveaway}

*Product was received to help facilitate this review. Regardless, all opinions are 100% my own!

Hope you enjoyed the first round of our summer boredom busters for the car; now to move on to the big kids. I think they can be harder to entertain because they are more vocal about their boredom and they typically don’t take naps anymore. Man, naps sure make car travel fly. If only I could nap while traveling. Fat chance of that happening with 6 kids in the car. HAHA

Anyway on to our 7-12 year olds! There are endless activities for big kids and I would love to hear your ideas, so please leave me a comment and share away!!!

Ages 7-12

Books: Most kids are readers at this age so a new book can be fun or a book on tape to listen to can be fun for the whole family. You can rent books on tape from the library and even download them to your IPODs for free. Kids can listen to and understand books beyond their reading level so its a great way to introduce something new.

Games, Games, Games: My family loves board games but they can be tricky in the car. But Super Duper Publications has some great games that are totally portable and perfect for the car. They are great for restaurants and keeping kids quiet at church too! My favorite part is they are educational and the kids don’t even notice because they think they are fun!!

I recently got three new ones that my kids really like. Their favorite is Understanding Sentences Fun Deck because it has a little remote that you use to light up the answer. Anything with buttons is fun!! The other games they are enjoying right now are Auditory memory for WH questions and Sentence Fill-In the Deck! They are all games that are good for Kindergarten to 6th grade.

Travel Games for 7-11 year olds

Mad Libs: My kids love mad libs and they all can play together.  Hours of laughter and entertainment for a couple of dollars!

Car Games: Remember all the games you used to play as a kid in the car way before T.V.? Guess what kids still love them you just have to introduce them! I found this car review that has 10 fun games to do in the car and they are perfect to introduce to kids of any age! Check out theses 10 road trip games.I promise you wont be disappointed!!

Activity Books: Never underestimate a new coloring book for an older kid either. Even my 11 year old loves a new coloring book! A word search or soduko book is another great alternative for kids who don’t like to color.  All of these things can be picked up at the $1 store.

One lucky reader will get to win their very own Super Duper Publication game! You can choose from Say and GlueSentence Fill-In the Deck, or Understanding Sentences (our personal favorite)! Enter below and good luck!!!

Fun ways to take a walk {Urbini Stroller Review}

“I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for Urbini. I received a product sample to facilitate my review and as a thank you for participating.”

We have been having some great spring weather and in Arizona it doesn’t last long so we need to enjoy it as much as we can! My kids love taking walks and I have put together a list of 5 fun ways to take a walk with a twist!

5 Fun Ways to Take a Walk

1. Go on a dessert walk. After dinner grab your favorite cold treat (popsicle, ice cream cone etc.) and go for a nice walk around the neighborhood. It is a great way to enjoy a walk when the weather starts to get a little warm.

2. Go on a walk in the rain. This is one of my kids favorite walks. Now I’m not suggesting you go out in a torrential storm but a nice sprinkle is lots of fun to go walking in.

Fun on a dime - family time - stroller

3. Grab your flashlights and head outside for a an after dark walk. This is oodles of fun and you see a whole other side of life outside after dark. We live rural so we can see lots of neat things like owls and bats outside after dark. Personally I’m not all that excited about the bats but the kids love them!

4. Alphabet sounds walk. Who says exercise and fun cant be a little educational too. Before you head out write all the letters of the alphabet down on a piece of paper, grab a clip board and a pencil and you are ready to go. This works great if you have lots of ages because the older kids can write. As you are walking around look for things that start with each letter of the alphabet. (ie: A for airplane, B for boat, C for cactus, D for dandelion etc.) By having all the letters written down before you start you don’t have to find the letters in order.

5. Find the alphabet walk. Check out my post on Rusty and Rosy for a fun twist on finding the alphabet in nature. The kids love this one because they get to use the camera!

Alphabet Nature Walk

Everyone knows that in order to take a walk with little kids a good baby stroller is a must!! I recently received an Urbini Touri Travel System and love using it for walks, running errands, and it would be great for traveling.  I ordered the bright red color and love it.

Urbani Stroller Review 5

I am expecting my 7th child and I have used a lot of strollers and infant seats over the years and I love the bright bold colors. I am currently using the Urbini stroller with my one and a half year old son and it is fabulous. It is super easy to push and super easy to open and close. It folds up nice and compact and is perfect for summer travels.

 Urbani Stroller Review full set

It has a great shade covering that is great in the hot summer weather. Can you tell I love the stroller!! My only con is the cup holder doesn’t work because it swivels and the cup just spills.

Urbani Stroller Review
The car seat is very light and compact. It is nice and narrow which is great if you have other car seats and boosters in the same row. I wish I had had it years ago when I had smaller cars!! It snaps in and out easily and sits in the stroller nicely. I have been recommending it to everyone and people are always asking me where I got it because the color stands out so much! It is one of the best travel systems I have ever had! You definitely can’t beat the price!!

Here are the specs from the company about the Urbini Touri Travel System:

  • Includes Petal Infant Car Seat that holds children up to 35 lbs
  • Lightweight frame
  • Multi-position reclining seat
  • Removable child’s arm bar
  • Tuck away sun visor
  • Roomy storage basket
  • Front suspension wheels

A Personalized CD from Play Anywhere Is A Perfect Unique Gift {Review & Giveaway}

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Screen Shot 2014-05-05 at 5.10.16 AM

No matter what the occasion, you can never go wrong with a personalized CD of their favorite music. I had the opportunity recently to create my own music mix to share with my kiddos thanks to and the perfect digital song gift. With over 4 million songs to chose from, I put together an awesome mix that we have been grooving to on the way home from school everyday since it arrived. My kiddos love it!

Create your own custom music CD
As a music lover, I like to listen to a variety of different types of music and listening to the same group/sound gets boring for me and a lot of the radio stations play the same popular songs way too much. With Play Anywhere, I was able to include music from a variety of artists and sounds. I wanted it to include a little of everything and songs that I wanted my kiddos to be familiar with that I grew up with that I no longer hear on the radio. My only problem while creating my playlist is that I am horrible with song titles. So thanks to all my friends, family and the Fun On a Dime fans, who gave me some great suggestions and helped me find the right songs to make an absolutely perfect mix!

Here is My Custom List:

Do not judge my list! Ha! It’s a perfect mix of fast and slower songs (old and new) and now my kiddos are singing “Yoda” all the time. It brings a smile to my face every time!

  1. Cielito Lindo
  2. Accidentally in Love (From “Shrek”)
  3. We Can Change The World (Featuring Bridgit Mendler)
  4. Help
  5. Popular (Original Cast Recording/2003)
  6. Respect
  7. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
  8. Dynamite
  9. Yoda
  10. I’m a Believer (From “Shrek”)
  11. Firework
  12. Yellow Submarine (Yellow Submarine)
  13. We Will Rock You (Remastered)
  14. Somebody To Love (Album Version)
  15. I Gotta Feeling (Album Version)
  16. [Theme From] The Monkees
  17. Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)
  18. Do You Believe In Magic
  19. I Like To Move It from Madagascar (Kids Dance Party)
  20. I Want You Back (Album Version)
  21. Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)
  22. My Favorite Things
  23. Hey Ya!
  24. What Makes You Beautiful
  25. George Of The Jungle

Tips To Making an Awesome Custom CD

  • Do search by album/artist for your songs – it’s a lot easier to find the version of the song you want
  • There are a lot of popular songs sang by multiple artists. Sometimes 30 seconds (the sample they let you hear) is not long enough, so the more specific info you have the better you will like that version
  • Do check out their “Playlists” tab for inspiration. They have a fun mix already selected to make searching easier.
  • To find a soundtrack for a movie type in the movie name, like “Sound of Music” and look under the Albums tab (the second from the left). If there are still too many options add “Sound of Music Soundtrack” and make sure you look under Albums. In some cases, I could not find the soundtrack if I included “sound track” or “movie”

WIN A Free Custom CD!!!

One lucky winner will win their own custom CD of up to 75 minutes of music tracks of your choice, custom cover art/message, free shipping and get ALL the music on all your devices. Just awesome!

Disney Princess Belle Costume {Review}

*Product was received to help facilitate this review. Regardless, all opinions are 100% my own!

Dress up is a regular occurrence in our house with 5 girls, but I have tell you dress up and I have a love hate relationship!  I love watching my kids pretend play and use their imaginations but I hate mending and fixing dress up clothes. (I hate the mess too but that is my kids’ issue not the clothes!) Dress up clothes are not made to be durable, which is annoying. Now I will say that you get what you pay for in dress up clothes. When you pay $20 for a box of six outfits you can’t expect them to last long. But when you fork over the big bucks for a nice costume you expect them to last more than a few months! We recently had our Belle Disney costume die beyond repair and my six year old has been asking for a new one.

#DisneyMom Disney Costume Review - Belle

Well, she was pleasantly surprised when a box arrived in the mail for her with just such a dress!! I have to tell you I don’t think I can ever buy a dress up dress from anywhere again! This costume is made so strong and durable not to mention all the pieces and how nice it looks. It puts our old one to shame and we got it at the Disney store!

Disney Costume Review - Belle 3

It came with a head band, dress and a petticoat to make it even fancier!

Disney Costume Review - Belle 2

Now I will say you definitely get what you pay for. The costumes on are not super cheap but they aren’t super expensive either. That being said they are totally worth the cost!!!

5 Great Potty Training Tips with Disney Princess Magical Sparkle Potty System

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

I will be the first one to admit that I do not know everything, but boy do I love a good tip or idea. Through my own experience potty training 2 children and through other moms around me, I have learned some fantastic potty training tips that I would love to share!

Start Practicing When You See Signs of Readiness

Watch for those signs of interest/readiness and slowly move forward with training. My youngest started showing signs of readiness around 13 months. I thought I was making it up in my head, but she did it every day (i.e. bring me diapers when she needed a diaper change or she would hang out near the bathroom when she was doing her biz). I think it is a bit early to start full on potty training, but I can start practicing. Every morning when she wakes up, I will have her sit on her potty chair and she will usually “go” within a few minutes. We make it fun by singing a few songs while we wait and definitely shouting for joy when she does “go”.

Potty Chair Review - The First Years - Princess

Pick the Right Potty Chair For Your Child

Take your time to research a good potty chair that will work for your family and more importantly one that your child will love to use. When it was time to start potty training my first child, I rushed to my local store and picked what I thought would work best for him from the three options there. We went through 2 different potty chairs and he never really liked using them, but they made great stools!

Times have changed quite a bit in the last 7 years and technology has improved. There are plenty of ways to research for a good match on a seat and you are definitely getting more bang for your buck if you can find something like the Disney Princess Magical Sparkle Potty System by The First Years that is a 3 in 1 (a potty chair, removable seat to be used on the family toilet and a stool that can be used for years to come). It is available on

This particular chair is perfect for my youngest. She loves everything girly and with the pink, purple and the added “magical twinkle” sound at the push of a button, this fits her just right. An added bonus is that her big sister is so excited that it has princesses on it, she is always around to cheer our toddler on in her potty training efforts! Big sister was always a fan of the Huggies Princess Pull-Ups Brand Training Pants and this chair matches perfectly.

2014-02-25Potty Chair Review - The First Years - Princess

Other features that I really like is that is comes with a padded soft-seat that she seems to like. We have tried another chair and I simply cannot get her to sit longer than 10 seconds on it. I do not have that problem with this chair. It also comes with a lift-out pot for easy emptying and cleaning, which  is also awesome because I can see if and how much she went. And finally, I love that it can be used on the adult seat, too. I was a little confused on how to do this at first, but you basically remove the entire lighter pink part of the seat. And, at least on our toilet lid, the potty chair has some clasps that hooked under the rim of the toilet seat to prevent her from wiggling the potty chair around or accidentally tipping the whole chair forward.

Make It Exciting

Make potty training an enjoyable experience for everyone involved! If everyone is stressed out, nothing is going to get accomplished. So, find their reward button. For some it is treats, for other’s it is praise (i.e. shouts of joy and sticker charts), little toys or some other creative reward. Since I am starting my youngest daughter a lot younger than her siblings, we are aiming for the fun and praise and hope it will be enough. It took me a lot longer to figure out the magic reward for him was that he was banned from wearing shorts and flip flops unless he went on the potty. Ha! I guess he really loved his shorts and flip flops a little too much.

Think Ahead and Take It With You

This is a fantastic tip that I learned from watching a good friend potty train her oldest. At some point in the potty training journey we all have to leave our house and when we do we may be leery of trying a public bathroom. Instead you should just keep one with you in the car. A potty system just like the one above is perfect to keep in your trunk and use when you are on the go with your potty training child in hand. Before you leave your car you can have them sit and do their “business” (hopefully parked in a discreet part of the parking lot away from the public). Keep a couple plastic bags and bottle of water in the back of the car with the chair to help rinse and dispose of any potty “treasure”. This will be so much easier on you and your child.

Every Child Has Their Own Time Schedule

Most importantly you need to remember that every child has their own schedule, Even though you may want them to be potty trained yesterday, they may not be as eager or ready to start. My eldest was not ready to fully potty train until he found out at 3.5 years old that his boy cousin, who he thought was the coolest, could go to the bathroom on his own. My 2nd was on a schedule of her own. It drove me bonkers! No matter how much we bribed, pushed and encouraged, she took her sweet little time and was ready to be potty trained when she decided. My youngest, thank goodness, is a way more eager and so I am encouraging her at slow speed. She has some great examples around her, a seat she enjoys and a ton of encouragement, so I am hoping we will have an early, or at least earlier than her siblings,  potty trainer!

Exploring the Benefits of Music and Color with GiggleBellies Musical Adventures {Giveaway}

I was provided with a GiggleBellies Ultimate Fan Pack to review and share my experience with you, my readers. Regardless all opinions are 100% my own!

GiggleBellies logo

Before becoming a parent, my idea of children’s music was something that scared me and I avoided it, but I have been proven wrong again and again over the years with music like the GiggleBellies. This is not the typical annoying music that I remember my little sisters listening to with crazy instruments and high pitched singing. The music from the GiggleBellies Musical Adventures are beautifully sung songs that I, as a parent, would not mind having stuck in my head all day and better yet, my children love them. They especially love watching the DVD that accompanyies each song that was designed with specific colors to match the mood of each tune and interesting GiggleBellies characters to catch your youngsters attention.

“We strive to initiate the words “Play it again” and bring forth valuable and fun entertainment to your little ones. Our goal is to inspire toddlers and preschoolers to sing, dance and learn, which we believe is a balanced approach….Simply put, we create unique music and creative worlds that kids enjoy and understand. AHOOGA!™”

Scientists have studied the benefits of music and color and the creators of Gigglebellies have put these studies into action by creating entertaining and colorful scenes to go with each song and in turn truly creating a musical adventure. I have read articles about the science of color theory in relation to children and it has been so fun to actually see it in action and experience it with music.

Our Experience

As soon as I turned on our first DVD all my children were mesmerized by the music and colors. I will admit that I was a little more curious about the animals that are part of the music. They are different, but they children loved them and they have grown on me because, like I mentioned earlier, I really like the music. My two older children will stop everything they are doing to listen to the music. My 15 month old really likes them, too, but she has her own way of enjoying them. I like to put a DVD in while I load the dishwasher to distract her. It will not be long before I hear her squealing on the other side of the room from me dancing and twirling. (Watch her in action here) Love it!

GiggleBellies review and giveaway

A couple other things that surprised me was that a lot of the songs are classics that every child should know, like “Working on The Railroad” and “Down By the Bay”. My other surprise were the GiggleBellies characters. They are  a bit quirky looking, but they have grown on me and my children did not even notice that they were different. They love them just as much or more than the music! In fact, before I ever agreed to try out these videos I made sure to play a few previews to see their reaction. When they all came running across the house when they heard the music and then kept asking to see more, I knew they were all going to enjoy these!

Other Gigglebellie Perks

With each DVD all the songs are available in MP3 format and include free color pages, lyric sheets and a couple fun wallpapers. This means I can make my own CD or download them onto my phone to let my little ones listen to when we are on the go.  I can also download and print the coloring pages for my 2 older children to color their hearts out, which my 6 year old will enjoy the most because she is a coloring maniac!
