Gelatin Fish Bowls (Cup Size)

Here’s a fun little cool treat any kid is sure to love. In our case, we made this to go with my son’s Pirate  Themed Birthday Party.

You can get the specific recipe for Aquarium Cups here, but this is the basics and tips I learned while making it.

What You Need:

  • Get the recipe here
  • Clear cups or small bowls
  • 1 box of blue gelatin
  • Water
  • Ice
  • Chopped strawberries
  • Bite sized chewy fish (we used Swedish Fish)

Tips:

1. We did the speed method, i.e. the freezer instead of the fridge and used 2 boxes instead of 1.

2. We added the strawberries in the first layer.

It is frosty from the freezer. Sorry!

3. Let the second layer set and add the fish to the jello just before you serve it. Those who saved their fish bowls until the next day said the soggy fish were not appetizing. Also, the top will not be smooth after adding the fish. You are sliding the fish in through the top, so you get the look of a fish bowl from the side.

4. The kids thought it was fun, but of course, they love anything gelatin!

ENJOY!

Pizza Cake

This is my Cindy, my super talented neighbor who made the Bear Rolls, and her really cute son (seriously, way cute!).

Her family made us this fun little treat before we moved…

A pizza cake!

Made from a white cake with frosting as the sauce, Starburst candies rolled and shaped into the pepperonis and peppers, fondant for the sausage and olives and shredded white chocolate for the cheese.

She even walked into a local pizza joint and got a new pizza box to finish the look!

The kids absolutely loved it and I don’t think they will ever eat a regular pizza without asking us if we are going to have a cake pizza, too.

They devoured it! The other lovely to the right is her oldest.

ENJOY!

Pirate Pizza

My son wanted “Pirate Pizza” for his birthday. I am not sure if I would categorize this as a failure or success. The final picture does not do it justice and I think it would have looked better minus the sausage. BUT my son loved it, told everyone about it for over a week after I made it and still talks about it months later, so I think that makes it a huge success! I think he thought it was cool, too, because he got to help make it and saw what we were attempting to create. lol

What You Need:

  • A pizza ready to add the cheese (great pizza recipe here)
  • Paper with a cut out of a scull & crossbones (or other object you want to create)
  • Cheese

Directions:

Step 1: Make/prep your pizza with all the toppings you want except the cheese. We always use our favorite pizza recipe.

Step 2: This part can be for your little helpers, if any…Place cut out on pizza and then add your cheese. This is obvious, but be sure to remove the paper before placing the pizza in the oven to bake! Try not to add too much cheese around the edges of the paper because once the cheese melts it will melt into your design if there is too much. I attempted to add cheese where the eyes were (see the far right picture).

Step 3: Bake! If you look closely you can see the design and I will admit that you could see it better in person. BUT it is all going to get eaten, right? Luckily, since my son helped make it, I think he was more excited by the idea of it.

Step 4: Serve with some “Pirate Root Beer” and you will have one happy group of Pirates!

I’ll Never Buy Store Made Ice Cream Cake Again!

Growing up it became a family tradition to buy an ice cream cake from a local ice cream store for our birthdays. It was a family favorite! I recently made one for my son’s birthday party and everyone loved it. I will even admit that I thought it was better than the store bought! And best of all it is really easy to put together and it is less calories using this Pudding Frosting instead of the typical high calorie frosting used to decorate most cakes. So you don’t have to feel as guilty eating it!

What You Need:

  • Pan – the size you would like the cake
  • Carton of favorite ice cream
  • A baked cake half the size of the desired cake – I used 1/3 – 1/2 a box cake mix and baked it in a bread pan
  • Cooking spray or oil
  • Plastic wrap
  • A plate, flat pan or cardboard with tinfoil around it to display your cake.
  • Pudding frosting
  • Ice cream scooper
  • Spoon
  • Spatula
  • Toppings/decorations – cookies, sprinkles, fudge sauce, etc.

Directions:

Step 1: When your cake (the portion from the box mix) is finished baking remove from pan and let it cool. Once it is has mostly cooled place on plate wrapped in plastic wrap and put it in the freezer for at least 10-20 minutes. If you are not going to make the ice cream cake the same day, be sure to wrap the cake completely in plastic wrap to preserve the taste. Freezing the cake makes it easier to transfer to the pan later to make the complete ice cream cake.

Step 2: While letting the carton of ice cream sit on the counter for a few minutes to slightly soften (easy to scoop), prep your the pan you will be using to make the ice cream cake. A bread pan was the easiest to use for me. Make sure the pan is thoroughly dry before starting or your cake may have difficulty coming out later! Spray the inside of the pan with cooking spray and then line with plastic wrap. The cooking spray will help the plastic wrap stick to the pan better.

Step 3: Press ice cream into pan and smooth out the top with a spoon when you have reached the desired amount you want. Usually a half carton works well for us giving us about 1.5 inch thickness of ice cream throughout the pan.

Step 4: Place the pan of ice cream in the freezer for a few minutes while you prep the cake. Take cooled or frozen cake from the freezer. Cut off any rounding that may have occurred while baking so the cake has a flat top and bottom. (It is easiest to do this if the cake is frozen).

Step 5: Transfer the cake carefully on top of ice cream in the pan. Cover the entire cake with plastic wrap and let it sit in the freezer to solidify for at least 20 minutes. When I make this I usually will do the cake a day/night before and let it sit over night, but as long as the ice cream is solid you can make it quicker.

Step 6: Ready to flip and frost! Prepare your plate that you will be displaying the cake on and make sure it can fit/go in the freezer. Make sure the sides of the plastic wrap that is lining the pan are out of the way ( you want to use them to help pull the cake out and not have them under the cake). Flip the cake onto  plate and remove the plastic wrap that was lining the pan. It should go easily, but if for some reason it does not, carefully place the bottom of the pan under running water for a few seconds and that should loosen it up. You may need to place it back in the freezer for a few minutes if the ice cream has softened.

Step 7: Frost the cake with Pudding Frosting or any other frosting and a spatula. (The less cool whip in the frosting the thicker it is and the easier to frost the sides with) Use a soft hand or you may start taking off the ice cream! I like to save the frosting until the last few hours before serving because it is hard to cover the cake once it is frosted.

Step 8: Decorate as desired! Sprinkles are quick and easy. For this cake we smashed up some Oreos (after removing the creme) and sprinkled on the cake while the frosting was not frozen. Then we used a cookie cutter and lined the design inside the cookie cutter with powdered sugar.

We used a few cookie crumbs for the eyes and nose cavities of the skull and cross bones!

Step 9: Place in the freezer until you are ready to serve it!

The Best Homemade Chicken Pot Pie

Are you on Spring Break? Check out this list of 12 fun ideas to do during spring break.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did you know today is Pi (π) Day? π = 3.14 = March 14. Pretty cute, huh? I thought so! In honor of Pi Day I am making my family our favorite (and the easiest) Homemade Chicken Pot Pie for dinner and I thought I would share the recipe with you. This has been a family favorite of mine growing up. It is so easy to make and it makes the whole house smell wonderful, which = me looking like the best cook ever! I love to take this over to friends if I ever need to bring them a meal. The trick to the “easy” is the store bought pie crust that you can find in the freezer section! ;-)
Making a pie on Pi Day is just something fun to do and I have to make dinner anyways, so why not?!?! If I am feeling ambitious, I may have the kiddos help make a pudding pie for dessert (also super easy!)…do you see a theme here? I think I am in a lazy mood! =) If you are in the mood to make a real fruit pie, you should give our Mini Apple Pies Recipe a try.
Happy π Day!
What You Need:
  • 2 9-inch pie crusts ~ pre-formed store bought is the easiest or you can make your favorite pie crust from scratch.
  • 1 package frozen peas and carrots ~ we like adding corn, too.
  • 1 Tablespoon dried onion flakes
  • 3-4 chicken breasts, cooked and cut up ~ I aim for about 3-4 cups.
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: other favorite seasonings ~ we like to add garlic, too.
Directions:
Step 1:Stir the chicke, veggies, soup, onions and seasonings together in a bowl.
Step 2: Pour mixture into one of the pie shells. Put the other pie shell on top. If using pre-formed pie shells, just trim off the crust from the top pie shell and pinch ends to fit on the one below. And make sure to cut a few slits on the top crust.
I usually cut a letter for a person’s name or a happy face for the slits.
Step 3: Bake at 350 Degrees for about one hour. When baking place your pie pan on a baking sheet to prevent your oven from getting messy in case your pie bubbles a little.
**Variation: Sometimes I do not make a bottom crust so I can add 2 cups of peeled, chopped and pre-cooked potatoes to the chicken-veggie mixture.
ENJOY!!
