Yogarilla from SuperDuper and $50 Gift Certificate {Review and Giveaway}

I always love when we can incorporate fun and learning in the same activity. Each child learns differently and the trick is figuring out which kind of learner they are (i.e. auditory, kinistetic, visual or needs help with a learning disability) and incorporate it into a fun activity. I recently learned about Super Duper Publications and all the wonderful learning games they have available that do just that.

“For children who may need a little support when it comes to social skills, reading, math, spelling andcritical thinking, a few lessons via a game can have a huge impact. Super Duper is already a hit in many classrooms from public schools to homeschoolers.”

We have been having a lot of fun with their Yogarilla Cards. It’s a deck of 55+ colorful, oversized cards with a different yoga poses on each one all demonstrated by a gorilla! The gorilla just seems to make it more fun. On the back of each card is a step by step list on how to achieve the pose, which is helpful for me so I can help the kids do it right. The kids love to just look at the card and see if they can do it. Also on the back of each card are variations and suggested activities for the pose (i.e. pretend you are an alligator). On the instructions cards they have suggested routines to practice fine and gross motor skills, communication, sensory processing, attention and cognition.

I put together the cards for one of the routines that focused on breathing and rhythms and did it with my son and daughter before bed a couple nights. Not only did I get a nice relaxing mini workout and some fun time with my kiddos, but my daughter who is a late night busy owl jumped right into bed and went to sleep when we finished. I can’t claim that will happen for everyone, but it sure is a nice perk from our yoga workout.

Fun with Yoga

Super Duper Publications has a ton of fun learning activities that I would love to get my hands on (i.e. Jeepers Creepers and any of their Fun Packs). They even have learning games available for your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch (and some are free).

Fun Games For The Summer Time

Summer is coming and time for car trips and lots of fun outside. We enjoy playing simple games together as a family.

What are your tricks for a fun time during the summer in the car or just playing outside?

Here is one of our favorite games to play…I SPY…because you are never to old or too young to play! I am sharing some variations on how to play over at Rusty And Rosy.

Bean & Straw Game

The M&M Straw Game is not only a favorite with our friends and family, but it is also a favorite with a lot of Fun On a Dime readers. It is the most popular game on this site. And until recently, we could never play it with our own kiddos because shake straws, believe it or not, are harder for younger children to suck with. Thanks to my son’s kindergarten teacher we do not have that problem anymore. She taught me a variation that is more kid friendly (and sugar addict friendly, too) that lets us play this game with everyone! It was my, “Why didn’t I think of that?” moment. Everyone should have a Kindergarten teacher for a friend!!! They just look at things differently and thank goodness for that!

I shared the full details over on my post, Beans and Straws Make Counting Fun, at Rusty & Rosy. Come over and check it out!

P.S. The after Christmas Sales/Discounts are wrapping up. Don’t forget to swing by a favorite store in person or online, and snag a few great deals on gifts for birthdays throughout the year or even for a White Elephant gift. My favorite stores for deal snagging W-mart and of course, Target! Online shopping? Here are some Target coupon codes that may help you out.

{Group Games} The Standing Roller Coaster

Hello! I’m Brittany from Play With Your Family and I am so excited to be a guest on Michelle’s amazing blog! Sarah is the co founder of Play With Your Family and we both went to Brigham Young University (just like Michelle) in Recreational Therapy! We now have so much fun staying at home with our kids and have found, in our site, a great way to share our knowledge and promote our passion: The Family! The goal of our site is to help you strengthen your family through recreation. Each Monday we issue a Family Challenge that helps us set a goal that will aid us in strengthening our families that week. Throughout the week we post ideas, articles, books reviews, stories, or other material focusing on families. Every Friday we teach you a new game and in our “So What?” section, we share how that game can be used constructively do anything from improving communication to just bringing more laughter into your home. Come check us out!

Today I’m going to share one of my favorite games…The Standing Roller Coaster!

We played this at a family reunion most recently and it was SO fun for everyone! All you need is a large rope (old climbing ropes work the best) tied in a circle. Your knot must be tight so people can’t undo it by pulling on it. I would suggest tying a double fisherman’s knot with a great tutorial here on how to tie it.

Have everyone hold onto the rope, standing in a circle, with their feet firmly planted on the ground. This game is easiest played outside or in a large space. The rules are:

  • You cannot move your feet.
  • You cannot let go of the rope.
  • You cannot fall on the ground. (Only your hands can touch the ground if you can get back up without letting go.)

On “go” everyone starts moving the rope to try and fling other people off. The last person standing wins!!!

The game is such a blast! It is fun for the whole family and a great way to get everyone laughing. After doing a few competitions we did a girls competition and a boys competition which was a fun way to mix things up. You could also do different age groups if you have a big span in your family and luckily while your waiting, it’s just as fun to watch as it is to play! :)

So What? Sometimes when you are going to get ready to do a difficult task it is easier when you start off by getting everyone comfortable and at ease. In Recreation Therapy, we call this “norming.” This is a great “norming” game because it gets everyone on the same level and can set up your family to be in a positive mindset before you jump into a difficult discussion, task, or challenge. Not to mention all the great benefits of just laughing as a family!!!

{Group Game} The Sign Game – Action Style

I have played many variations of the Sign Game and all of them were fun, but this version has to be my favorite to watch! It is very interactive and you have the freedom to be as creative as you want. It is supposed to be a fast paced game and therefore may need to be slowed down and the rules altered for groups with younger children. Perfect for large or small groups! I made a video demonstration, too, so you can see it in action!

What You Need:

  • A group of at least 4 individuals – the larger the group the more entertaining it can be

Directions:

Step 1: Choose your sign and announce it to the group. This is usually done in a roll call fashion. See the video below for ideas on some signs and how the roll call is done.

Step 2: First player calls out their own sign and then calls out a 2nd sign of choice for a member in the group.

Step 3: Whoever’s sign is called out accepts the call (no other option but to accept) by repeating their own sign and then calling out a sign of another player in the group.

Stpe 4: Keep the game going quickly with hardly any pauses. See how long you can last and keep it going until everyone is busting a gut from laughing!

Here is a video demonstration for your viewing pleasure…I do not know about you, but I can’t help but laugh through this video!

ENJOY!!!

{Group Games} Zip-Bom

I love playing a good game. Games seem to lighten the mood and are great for connecting with others. This is a really fun group game my nieces taught me. We were in giggles in no time!

Object

Keep the game moving, without mixing up the cues.

Set-Up

Have all the players sit in a circle, facing the middle.

How To Play

Rule 1: Two verbal commands keep the game in motion. A player must turn and face the person next to him and say either ”ZIP” or BOM”. The command “ZIP” starts the game going one direction, and “BOM” reverses the motion.

Rule 2: You cannot show your teeth! Keep your lips covering your teeth. You’ll get the humor of this as you start playing.

Rule 3: You can choose to have elimination or just keep playing for fun and see how long you can keep it going.

For Example: One person starts the game by turning to the player on his left and says “ZIP”. This starts the play in motion. That person can then either remain facing the first player and say “BOM” to reverse the direction, or can turn to the person to his left and say “ZIP”.

Tip

* Make sure you face the direction that corresponds to the command you are giving. If the person on your left turns to you ands says “ZIP”, you cannot say“ZIP” back to him. You could either face left and say “BOM” or turn right and pass the “ZIP” on in the same direction it was already traveling. If the wrong command is given, the player who messed up is out of the game. Keep playing until there are just two players left.

* The faster the game goes, the more challenging, and fun. Keep the game in motion, and get faster as you go!
Here’s a quick video demo of the game:

Give it a try and let me know how it goes!
